Much evil? Auto-focus support chronic focuses on A300 By Steve W. After shooting about a hundred photos on my a300 early, I realized that the images were not as sharp as reviews led me to expect high. Thinking that my goal was sub-par optics, which ordered the replacement from Amazon. Same story with the second copy. I then created a tie between my Sony 16-105 and the two copies Sigma. Shots were an old fence and a basket of fruit, 16 and 20 mm in steps of aperture at wide open f8 and f22. Autofocus center-weighted. Distance of 1 meter. During this test, I realized that the auto focus Sony was one meter, while the sigmas read a little more than a meter. I double checked my distance and then manually focus sigmas 1m. Photos were great. When allowed to autofocus, the Sigma always read only 1m past. Check my photos above, which seemed soft revealed this new approach was the real culprit.
Finally, compared to my Sigma 16-105 Sony 50mm 2.8 EX macro using the same procedure described above. The Sigma 50 mm auto-focus well and is certainly more detailed than the goal I have. I have also used other Sony lenses, and a 200 mm 2.8 Minolta autofocus smoothly. Given the good reviews of the 10-20mm, I can only assume it was the victim of a bad lot. Amazon was a pleasure to work with and refunded my money. I will wait for another few months. If that goal is good, I'll change my opinion. Sorry for the long post, but since I'm dinging a lens good reviews, I thought I should be specific.
